Accidentally Finding a reference to "Clean Coal" in the UK

Image
Whilst searching for details of UK imports of coal, this came to light, on the website of the, up to now, completely unknown, The Association of Coal Importers and Producers . The members of this organisation are: Associated British Ports Banks Group Celtic Energy Drax Power Limited GB Railfreight Hargreaves Services Jera Trading Merthyr (South Wales) Oxbow Coal Ltd Uniper Global Commodities SE Here are desmog in 2016, throwing some light on lobbying by coalimp and the Carbon Price Floor: https://www.desmog.co.uk/2016/08/22/emails-reveal-uk-coal-industry-s-urgent-lobbying-coal-use-falls-and-solar-power-soars

UK Coal: research points

What are the CO2 and other toxic emissions produced, by year, by plant, by type, for coal burned in the UK (ditto for all countries, world, but later)? What are the plans for decommissioning coal plants in the UK? How are coal burning plants used by the national grid in the hierarchy? What is the carbon footprint of extracting coal in other countries, transporting by ship to UK ports, distributing around the UK, etc? What's the story about biomass? What are the health effects of living downwind of coal plants in the UK? How much coal is held "in stock"? What differences are there in the emission efficiencies of UK coal plants? What are the health effects for those handing coal from source to usage? Which countries are we importing coal from? Which countries are we exporting coal to and for what purpose? What is the coal used for in the UK that isn't used for making electricity?

Coal in UK

Coal tracker and from the same site, real time energy mix for UK and the National Grid We'll organise the list of available UK grid monitors but for now here's: http://gridwatch.templar.co.uk/ For the week ending 24/12/2018, 352 GWh of electricity generated from coal. So that is 352,000,000 kWh and the emissions come to 352,000,000 kg of CO2 which is 352,000 tonnes CO2 or 352 ktCO2 for that week. Have we got the maths right here, putting aside the rounded up 1 kWh of coal generation is responsible for 1 kg CO2 emissions? Also see here http://carbonintensity.org.uk/

Coal in Germany

Image
From apnews article: nearly 40% electricity generation in Germany is still from coal, despite the closure of the deep coal pits lignite or brown coal is mined from open cast pits report due in Germany in February 2019 on future of lignite burning nuclear plants being phased out for 2022 From this article : Now, an update on 2018 energy production in Germany: https://www.reuters.com/article/us-germany-power-renewables/renewables-overtake-coal-as-germanys-main-energy-source-idUSKCN1OX0U2 Total 542 TWh generated in 2018 Renewable energy (solar, wind, biomass, hydroelectric) was 40.4% in 2018 Nuclear was 13.3%, and is due for phase out by 2022 Coal 38% in total (206 TWh), with domestic brown coal at 24.1% (131 TWh) and imported coal 13.9% (75 TWh). Although Germany has indicated an orderly long term exit from coal, the details of dates are unknown. gas was 7.4%, oil & waste the remainder

How much CO2 emission is produced from burning coal to make electricity?

First attempt at finding out, and we will refine as we find out more. To make a kWh of electricity the first thing we find out is that it is going to vary according to the coal being used, and the design of the coal plant. This makes the calculations of averages we have seen very dangerous to use when estimating, because there can be a substantial spread of values. We are going to use, for estimating purposes, a rounded value of: 1kg CO2 emissions per kWh electricity There are many other emissions produced as well of course. With so many experts on coal around, and so much information, we still think it's important to try to work out things for ourselves, so that we can try to understand. UK Coal Power Stations From gridwatch.co.uk The CO2 of Coal power generation is calculated using the value 870g/kWh. There are currently 16 Coal power stations in the UK.  The current Government plan is to shutdown all coal stations by 2025. If you want to add any details...

Welcome to The Dormouse That Roared blog

A warm welcome to our new blog. It's somewhere where we can go into a bit more detail, and it can be more of a reference point where needed, and unlike tweets, entries here can be updated when needed. Tweets flow rapidly out of sight, mostly, and we don't always want that to happen, especially where #ClimateBreakdown is concerned. We will sometimes use [B] to show there's a blog entry, because there won't always be space in the tweet for it. We will probably go back through twitter (@DormouseRoared) to see if there is information we should make available on this blog. We may also be able to have guest blogs on here as well, and just let us know if you want a topic to be covered or if we should correct something. We will try to get a balance between some very good changes that can come out of rethinking the way the world works and exploring topics of interest. It was deciding to understand what was going on with #COP24 in Katowice, Poland that brought everyth...
